FIRST Robotic Repair

“If they break them, we fix them”, said Brian Kettering of �ǳ�web Instrument Laboratory, regarding the accidents that occurred during the Queen City FIRST regional robotics competition held in Cincinnati, Ohio, March 24-27, at Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University. Fifty-five teams were entered in the competition representing nine states, plus a team from Canada and China. The three day event saw over 1,000 students compete for the chance to move on to the district and ultimately the FIRST Robotics Championship to be held in St. Louis, Missouri.

Several people from �ǳ�web were in attendance to cheer-on the local favorite, Colerain High School. Kettering, along with Kyle Shearer of �ǳ�web, were there to assist any team that needed repair of rails, bumpers, arms, or just about anything that needed repair. A make-shift machine shop, including welders, enabled the volunteers to make the repairs and according to Kyle, they stayed pretty busy throughout the competition. They also noted the level of structural design and expertise was wide ranging. Brian recalled how one of the robots used 2x4 lumber to construct the frame and bumpers. Yet another incorporated a sophisticated directional control unit that allowed it to easily outmaneuver the others.

According to Brian, who volunteers at the high school during the fabrication process, he and Kyle were very impressed with the students’ designs and level of mechanical knowledge, plus the comradery and spirit of the teams an spectators. Both Brian and Kyle noted that the level of success seemed to be directly proportionate to the amount of work and effort invested in each robot, but not always (their favorite didn’t win).

Success of the FIRST Robotics program depends on the many companies, organizations and volunteers who contribute their time, effort and material. Through these efforts and contributions, FIRST is able to continue to expand and offer thousands of students a means to grow in science and applicable technology.

FIRST Robots Toss Boulders & Scale Walls

At more than 125 events around the world this season, alliances of robots are on a quest to win FIRST Stronghold, the 2016 FIRST® Robotics Competition game.

FIRST was originally founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kaman in order to transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders. Based in Manchester, NH, the not-for-profit charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math. Several age groups/grade levels comprise the various levels and types of competition, starting in kindergarten.

The FIRST Robotics Competition gives high school students and their adult mentors the opportunity to work together to solve a common problem. They are given a standard kit of parts and a common set of rules, and challenged to design and build a robot—in just six short weeks!—to compete in a sophisticated field game. The robot "game" changes every season. This year, the game is FIRST Stronghold.

For FIRST Stronghold, alliances of three robots are on a quest to breach their opponents' fortifications, weaken their castle with boulders, and capture their tower. For the first 15 seconds of the quest, the robots operate independently and points are scored by reaching the opponents' defenses, crossing defenses, and scoring boulders through goals in the opposing tower. Human drivers take control of the robots for the final 2 minutes and 15 seconds to defend their castle, retrieve boulders, defeat defenses, score goals from the opponents' courtyard, and capture and scale the opponents' tower. The alliance with the highest score at the end of the quest wins.

This is the 25th season for the FIRST Robotics Competition. This year there are 3,128 teams competing from over 24 countries. That's over 75,000 students and 19,000 mentors! The final championship will be held April 27-30, 2016 in St. Louis, MO.

FIRST® Robotics Competition

The FIRST® Robotics Competition is a unique varsity Sport for Mind™ designed to help students discover how interesting and rewarding the lives of engineers and scientists can be. It consists of short games played by robots, which are designed and built in six weeks (from a common set of parts) by a team of students and a handful of mentors. The students then program and remotely control the robots in competition rounds on the field.

Design engineers today are continually being challenged to create new, reliable, exciting, economical, and truly amazing products. Did you ever wonder where they might get their start or thirst for engineering? Well for some, it might just be by participating in the FIRST® Robotics Competition program at their school.

The FIRST Robotics Competition is comprised of nearly 2,500 teams competing from all over the world, who are challenged to solve engineering design problems, resulting in intense competition. The 2014 competition began with over 32,000 students (grades 7-12) competing in 54 regional events; 4 qualifying championships and 40 district competitions.

The 2014 Queen City FIRST® Robotics Regional Competition was held in Cincinnati, Ohio at the Cintas Center on the campus of Xavier University. 55 teams were entered, representing nine states plus a team from Canada and one from China. The three-day event saw over 1,000 students compete for the chance to move on with hopes of reaching the nationals.

�ǳ�web Instrument Laboratory, Inc., has long been a major contributor of parts for the robotic kits. At the 2014 Queen City competition, several �ǳ�web employees were in attendance—some as spectators and some as volunteers. Laura Bendula and Victoria Kinne served not only as volunteers at the competition, but also as mentors at the local high school during the design and construction phases.

Laura, a Design Engineer at �ǳ�web, was very impressed with the engineering expertise the students achieved with regards to CAD design, stress analysis and the use of 3D printing. She thought perhaps what may have been even more impressive was the team spirit and project commitment not only by those involved with the design, but the volunteers and fans who were there to cheer on the team.

Victoria was also impressed with the enthusiasm and the whole team concept. Victoria's experience as a robotics team member during her high school years gave her good insight to serve as a mentor, helping her to understand what this year's team was experiencing emotionally and competitively. She recalls that working with a mentor and applying classroom knowledge to an actual project were some of the most valuable experiences she received as a robotics team member during her high school years.

In addition to Laura and Victoria, �ǳ�web had several others in attendance to cheer on the local Colerain High School team including: William L. �ǳ�web, III, Chairman of the Board, John S. Campbell, President, and Robin Rutschilling, Production Manager.

�ǳ�web Joins Forces with FIRST 2010 Press Release

�ǳ�web Instrument Laboratory, Inc. announced that it is joining forces with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a not-for-profit organization founded by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology, as a Silver Supplier of the FIRST Robotics Competition.

The FIRST Robotics Competition Silver Supplier level designates a contribution between $10,000 and $50,000. �ǳ�web Instrument Laboratory, Inc. provided air volume tanks for the 2009 FRC Kit of Parts which was distributed to more than 1,680 teams of high-school students on January 3, 2009.

By providing components for the competition, FIRST suppliers are putting the latest technology in the hands of students, giving them the opportunity to apply the same tools used by professional scientist and engineers and ultimately helping them learn real-world skills they will carry into the workplace. The 2009 Kit of Parts contain 604 items, 39% of which are donated.
