Nebulizing applications require pushing various medications, in combination with warm, moist air—or extra O2, if needed—to treat medical conditions like asthma, cystic fibrosis, obstructive lung disorders, and pulmonary disease. The medication mist is delivered through an endotracheal tube or a tightly fitted mask.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">dzweb has partnered with medical OEMs to deliver low-cost nebulizing application solutions that do not sacrifice functionality or chemical compatibility. By making a few simple modifications to our standard valve offering, our custom solutions save OEMs significant time and resources.</p> <h1 style="font-size: 18px; font-weight: bold; color:#0072BC; font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> Precision Control Solutions</h1> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">It is very challenging to precisely control the amount of medication inserted into lungs using pneumatic valves with ultra low pressure and limited power, but dzweb has a variety of different valves that accomplish this very well. For example, dzweb’s 10 and 15 mm electronic valves are ideal for these kinds of small space applications that require a fast and precise dose of medication.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">dzweb has over 75 years of experience in miniature pneumatic controls, which enables us to provide our customers with customized valve solutions quickly at the right price point you are looking for. Please contact us or your local distributor for assistance selecting the right valve for your precision pressure or flow control application.</p> <!--Related Products--> <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"> <tbody> <tr> <td colspan="5"> <p style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: bold; border-top:1px solid #ccc; padding-top:20px;">Related Products</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <!--PRODUCT 1--> <td class="rtecenter" style="border-right:1px solid #ccc; padding-left:10px; padding-right:5px; text-align:center;" valign="top" width="125"> <a href="/part/configure/E*10*">10 mm Valves</a><br /> <a href="/part/configure/E*10*"><img alt="10 mm Electronic Valve" src="/admin/_ra-rel-mnt_/simplecas/fetch_content/0df7b18e2b0415feb1a2e78af65bed4afbeac685/10%20mm-2.jpg" style="height: 100px;" /></a></td> <!--PRODUCT 2--> <td class="rtecenter" style="border-right:0px solid #ccc; padding-left:10px; padding-right:5px; text-align:center;" valign="top" width="125"> <a href="/part/configure/E*15*">15 mm Valves</a><br /> <a href="/part/configure/E*15*"><img alt="15 mm Electronic Valves" src="/admin/_ra-rel-mnt_/simplecas/fetch_content/666b429f26a1d50608e823aea3220c2cedb86e58/15%20mm-2.jpg" style="height: 100px;" /></a></td> <!--PRODUCT 3--> <td class="rtecenter" style="border-right:0px solid #ccc; padding-left:10px; padding-right:5px; text-align:center;" valign="top" width="125">  </td> <!--PRODUCT 4--> <td class="rtecenter" style="border-right:0px solid #ccc; padding-left:10px; padding-right:5px; text-align:center;" valign="top" width="125">  </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p> </p> <p> </p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags-wiki field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/cms/tags/10-mm" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">10 mm</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/cms/tags/15-mm" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">15 mm</a></div></div></div> Fri, 06 Sep 2024 19:04:52 +0000 Rachel Desenberg 754 at /cms /cms/wiki/precision-control-solutions-nebulizing-applications#comments Latching Valves 101 /cms/wiki/latching-valves-101 <div class="field field-name-field-category-wiki field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Category:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/cms/categories/videos" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Videos</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px;">What is a latching valve, and what benefit does it provide? What is a latching valve? A latching valve is an electronically actuated two-position valve that stays detented in the last position that it was actuated into. Just like a detented toggle stays in the last position that it was actuated to, a latching valve remains in the same state that it was actuated to.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">I’ve never been over the pond, but apparently in Europe, these are commonly referred to as bi-polar valves.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">The main benefit of using a latching valve is low power consumption. Since the valve only requires a pulse of power to change states, it can stay unpowered until the state needs to be changed.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">dzweb offers a <a href="/products/electronic-valve-10mm-latching?">two-wire, 10 mm latching valve</a> as well as a <a href="/products/electronic-valve-15mm-latching?">three-wire 15 mm latching valve</a>. To change the state of a 10 mm latching valve, the polarity to the coil simply needs to be inverted. The 15 mm latching valve is a three wire valve with one wire to actuate, one wire to de-actuate, and one common wire.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Thanks for watching. However, I understand that standard options aren’t always the perfect fit for every application. Today, I would like to share with you some of the custom valves that we’ve done in the past. I know customs can sound scary to many customers, however, half of dzweb’s business is customs.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Here are a few examples of our custom valves that we’ve done.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Here’s a really simple one, it’s a 10 mm valve with extra long wire leads.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Here is a 15 mm latching valve with a custom 4.3 volt coil on it. They needed the 4.3 volt coil for a lithium ion battery pack in a mobile application.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Here we have two custom 15 mm 2-way valves with EPDM seals on a manifold with custom fittings for use with refrigerant.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Here we have a 15 mm 3-way valve with custom low temperature seals and a DIN connector which allowed our customer to go from DIN to a Deutsch connector for IP protection.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">And finally, we have a bank of 15 mm 3-way valves with custom orifice and spring configuration to achieve 250 psig working pressure.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">I hope this helps you understand what’s possible with dzweb custom valves. Today we’re going to talk about dzweb’s <a href="/products/electronic-valve-10-15mm">10 and 15 mm valve series</a>. This series is available in normally-open, normally-closed, as well as 2-way and 3-way configurations. They’re ideal for small areas where compact, electronically-controlled pneumatics are required.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">The materials the valve is composed of are lightweight, glass-filled nylon; stainless steel; and seal materials include FKM, as well as nitrile. These valves are engineered to be lightweight, have exceptional life, and reliability.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Connector options include wire leads, inline, 90 degrees, LED, and with the 15 mm series we have an option for spade terminals as well as DIN connectors. For the 10 mm, the inline, 90 degree with LED, and wire leads.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Standard voltages include 12 and 24 volt DC on the 10 mm series, 12 and 24 volt DC on the 15 mm series, as well as options for 24 volt AC, 110 AC, and 220 AC.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Standard wattages for the 10 mm are 0.6 to 1.3 and range up to 4 Watt in some of the 15 mm series. The 15 mm series can get us 85 L/min at 100 psig, and the high flow can get us up to 120 L/min at 36 psig. Standard flow ranges for the 10 mm are up to 24 L/min at 100 psig, and with the high flow we can achieve 35 L/min at 36 psig.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">With the 10 mm series, we offer some different valve configurations which include ISO, latching for low power consumption applications, as well as that high flow. With the 15 mm series we offer a latching version as well as the high flow.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Check out our website clippard.com for more information on manifolds, connectors, as well as a new video on special applications with these valves. A pilot valve is used to send a pressure signal when actuated and exhaust that signal when de-actuated. This valve has 3 ways (in or supply, output, and exhaust) along with 2 positions (closed—pressure blocked with the outlet vented to atmosphere, or open—pressure connected to outlet and the exhaust blocked).</p> </div> <div style="width:475px; background-color:#E6E6E6; padding-top:5px; padding-bottom:5px; padding-left:30px; padding-right:30px; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; margin-left:50px; margin-bottom:10px;"> <p style="padding-bottom:10px;"><b>4/2 Valves</b><br /> <br /> A 4-way 2 position valve is known as a 4/2. These valves are common in double acting cylinder applications where they are always supplying pressure to one side of the cylinder while venting the opposite side to atmosphere.</p> </div> <div style="width:475px; background-color:#E6E6E6; padding-top:5px; padding-bottom:5px; padding-left:30px; padding-right:30px; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; margin-left:50px; margin-bottom:10px;"> <p style="padding-bottom:10px;"><b>5/2 Valves</b><br /> <br /> A 5-way valve is essentially the same function as a 4/2, but with the added benefit of independent exhaust paths for each output port. This is most commonly not referred to as a 5-way, but a fully ported four way valve. This allows the designer to have specific controls on the exhaust paths for either the extend and the retract exhaust paths. Some manufacturers do not reference 5/2 or 4/2 when offering a 4-way valve and although the differences are subtle, it may be import to your specific application.</p> </div> <div style="width:475px; background-color:#E6E6E6; padding-top:5px; padding-bottom:5px; padding-left:30px; padding-right:30px; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; margin-left:50px; margin-bottom:10px;"> <p style="padding-bottom:10px;"><b>6/2 Valves</b><br /> <br /> Less common but still needed in specific applications, the 6-way valve is similar to having two 3-way valves mechanically tied within a single valve. Applications that require fail safe feature that assure that both valves will actuate at the same time are ideal for this function.</p> </div> <div style="width:475px; background-color:#E6E6E6; padding-top:5px; padding-bottom:5px; padding-left:30px; padding-right:30px; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; margin-left:50px; margin-bottom:10px;"> <p style="padding-bottom:10px;"><b>3 Position Valves</b><br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.clippard.com/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/3-position.png"><img alt="3 Position Valves" src="http://www.clippard.com/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/3-position.png" style="float: right; padding-left: 20px; width: 175px;" /></a> Some valves may have 3 positions in their function, which allows all ports to be blocked or open to atmosphere. These can be electronic valves or manual control valves that are spring centered with no power. These valves are not very common and are used for specific applications to either lock in a specific position of a cylinder or to open paths to atmosphere allowing the cylinder to be mechanically or manually positioned.</p> </div> <h2 style="font-size: 18px; font-weight: bold; color:#000000; font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> Valve Porting</h2> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Valve Porting pertains to the usability of the port and the direction of flow through the valve in different positions. There are two key points we will cover. First, the usage of the port—can we physically connect to the port? And second, the flow direction that the valve must accommodate for the application.</p> <div style="width:475px; background-color:#E6E6E6; padding-top:5px; padding-bottom:5px; padding-left:30px; padding-right:30px; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; margin-left:50px; margin-bottom:10px;"> <p style="padding-bottom:10px;"><b>Fully Ported</b><br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.clippard.com/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/fully-ported.png"><img alt="Fully Ported Valve" src="http://www.clippard.com/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/fully-ported.png" style="float: right; padding-left: 20px; width: 175px;" /></a> A "fully ported" valve is any valve that you can physically capture or plumb to all the ports. This does not mean that all the ports are necessarily threaded, but this does mean that the flow path can be captured via a specific method opposed to a vent hole that goes to atmosphere.</p> <p>Fully ported valves are ideal for applications where the media needs to be plumbed, for example: in clean rooms where all gases must be vented external to the room. dzweb's <a href="http://www.clippard.com/part/ET-2-12">ET-2-12</a> with threads on the inlet port and threads on the outlet port could be referred to as fully ported since all the ports on the valve can be plumbed, but the <a href="http://www.clippard.com/part/ET-3-12">ET-3-12</a> is not fully ported as the exhaust path is vented through small holes in the valves cap. Hence dzweb's offering of the <a href="http://www.clippard.com/part/ETO-3-12">ETO-3-12</a> fully ported version of the <a href="http://www.clippard.com/part/ET-3-12">ET-3-12</a>.</p> <p><i>It is important to note that "fully ported" does not specify that all ports can be pressurized, only that they can be ported. </i></p> </div> <div style="width:475px; background-color:#E6E6E6; padding-top:5px; padding-bottom:5px; padding-left:30px; padding-right:30px; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; margin-left:50px; margin-bottom:10px;"> <p style="padding-bottom:10px;"><b>Bi-Directional</b><br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.clippard.com/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/bi-directional.png"><img alt="Bi-Directional Valve" src="http://www.clippard.com/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/bi-directional.png" style="float: right; padding-left: 20px; width: 165px;" /></a> A bi-directional valve is a 2/2 valve that is not sensitive to which port is the inlet or the outlet. In Europe this is referred to as a bi-stable valve. Bi-directional valves are necessary for demanding applications where the higher pressure differential could be on either the inlet or the outlet.</p> <p>A common ball valve is a simple example of a valve that doesn't care what side the pressure is coming from and works in either direction. This valve would be known as bi-directional.</p> <p><i>The opposite valve to this would be a check valve, which flows in a single direction only. </i></p> </div> <div style="width:475px; background-color:#E6E6E6; padding-top:5px; padding-bottom:5px; padding-left:30px; padding-right:30px; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; margin-left:50px; margin-bottom:10px;"> <p style="padding-bottom:10px;"><b>Universally Ported</b><br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.clippard.com/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/Universally-Ported.jpg"><img alt="Universally Ported Valves" src="http://www.clippard.com/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/Universally-Ported.jpg" style="float: right; padding-left: 20px; padding-bottom: 20px; width: 175px;" /></a> What about the possibility of a valve with more than two ports that is fully ported and bi-directional? This would be a universally ported valve. A 3-way universally ported valve can be configured for six functions, such as: 3/2 normally-closed, 3/2 normally-open, 2/2 normally-closed, 2/2 normally-open, selector, or even diverter.</p> <p><i>It is important to note that not all fully ported 3/2 valves are universally ported. </i></p> </div> <h3 style="font-size: 18px; font-weight: bold; color:#000000; font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> Electronic Valve Actuation Types</h3> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">The actuation is what shifts the valve from one position to another and there are two popular types that need to be considered in selecting the proper valve for any application. The actuation can be any of the functions or porting discussed above and is another valve characteristic that is important to understand.</p> <div style="width:475px; background-color:#E6E6E6; padding-top:5px; padding-bottom:5px; padding-left:30px; padding-right:30px; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; margin-left:50px; margin-bottom:10px;"> <p style="padding-bottom:10px;"><b>Direct Acting</b><br /> <br /> Direct acting valves are simple in design since the actuation of the valve directly translates into the change of the position. This is typically achieved by moving the valve element via a magnetic coil. All of the dzweb <a href="http://www.clippard.com/products/electronic-valve-ev">EV Series valves</a> are direct acting since energizing the coil directly lifts the spider (a flat armature spring) to change the flow state. The benefits of direct acting valves are that they have no minimum pressure requirements, fast response time, and long life due to few moving parts. The lack of pressure requirements makes the valve design ideal for universally ported functions. dzweb's <a href="http://www.clippard.com/part/EVO-3-12">EVO-3-12</a> is a great example of a universally ported valve. The <a href="http://www.clippard.com/part/EVO-3-12">EVO-3-12</a> can be used with 80 psig on the normally-open inlet port, vacuum on the normally-open exhaust and select between them for an output.</p> </div> <div style="width:475px; background-color:#E6E6E6; padding-top:5px; padding-bottom:5px; padding-left:30px; padding-right:30px; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; margin-left:50px; margin-bottom:10px;"> <p style="padding-bottom:10px;"><b>Pressure Assisted</b><br /> <br /> Pressure assisted valves are the most common valves used in automation applications. They rely on the pressure supplied to the valve to assist with actuation. The amount of force available from pressurized air to shift a valve is far greater than the force that can be generated from a magnetic coil on a direct acting valve with similar flow and pressure ratings. Once the internal pilot valve opens the pressure will assist the valve in shifting. This allows the ports to open and the valve to flow at high flow and/or pressures.</p> <p>The benefit of pressure assisted valves is that they can take little electrical power because they are using the power of pressurized media. This allows for a smaller overall size for the given flow rates and port size. The drawbacks can be that they require a minimum pressure and don't allow universal porting options unless the pilot pressure is from an external force.</p> <p>Pressure assisted valves are generally engineered for specific applications to achieve the maximum flow and pressure ranges while using the smallest amount of electrical power possible. Other pressure assisted valves that do not have internal pilots are balanced and tuned so that pressure works in conjunction with spring forces and the coil to lift the seat and allow for flow. An example of a pressure assisted valve is the dzweb Maximatic <a href="http://www.clippard.com/part/MME-41PES-D012">MME-41PES-D012</a>. Energizing the coil on the <a href="http://www.clippard.com/part/MME-41PES-D012">MME-41PES-D012</a> applies pressure to a piston to shift the spool in the valve.</p> </div> <p><a href="http://www.clippard.com/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/Directional-Valve-Selection-Chart_1.jpg"><img alt="dzweb Directional Valve Selection Chart" src="http://www.clippard.com/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/Directional-Valve-Selection-Chart_1.jpg" style="width: 650px;" /></a></p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">For help selecting the best valve for your application, call 877-245-6247 or <a href="http://www.clippard.com/distributors">contact your local distributor</a>.<br />  </p> <p style="text-align:left; border-bottom:1px solid #ccc; border-top:1px solid #ccc; padding-top:10px; padding-bottom:10px; margin-bottom:25px; font-size: 10px; text-transform: uppercase;"><span style="font-size: 10px; text-transform: uppercase;">By Mike Kettering • Technical Sales Specialist • dzweb</span></p> <p> </p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags-wiki field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/cms/tags/es" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">ES</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/cms/tags/10-mm" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">10 mm</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/cms/tags/15-mm" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">15 mm</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/cms/tags/em" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">EM</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/cms/tags/ev" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">EV</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/cms/tags/maximatic" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Maximatic</a></div></div></div> Tue, 18 Sep 2018 15:35:22 +0000 Rachel Desenberg 590 at /cms /cms/wiki/how-select-electronic-directional-control-valves#comments Automated Spool Valve Assembly Machine Increases Efficiency, Boosts Capacity /cms/wiki/automated-spool-valve-assembly-machine-increases-efficiency-boosts-capacity <div class="field field-name-field-category-wiki field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Category:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/cms/categories/applications" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Applications</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p style="text-align:left; font-size:18px; line-height:21px; width:650px; padding-bottom:10px;">dzweb has years of experience manufacturing valve components with automated CNC machines that have the capacity to run lights out 24/7. Cutting edge laboratories are now able to test more of these samples than ever before—with improved precision and greater accuracy—through automation made possible with dzweb miniature pneumatic valves.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:15px; line-height:21px; padding-bottom:10px; width:550px;">An <a href="https://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-15-38">October 2014 report</a> by the <a href="https://www.gao.gov/">U.S. General Accountability Office</a> (GAO) suggests the <a href="https://www.fda.gov/">Federal Drug Administration</a> (FDA) and the <a href="https://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usdahome">U.S. Department of Agriculture's</a> (USDA) Pesticide Data Program "have room for improvement in the way they collect and share data on pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables and other food." The GAO claims that the FDA's "approach to monitoring for violations has limitations," pointing to the fact that while the FDA shows that "pesticide residue violation rates in 10 selected fruits and vegetables were low" from 2008 to 2012, "less than one-tenth of 1% of imported shipments in 2012" were tested for the pesticides. However, cutting edge laboratories now have the potential to test more samples thanks to an innovative new machine designed to increase efficiencies in the pesticide residue analysis process.</p> <div style="padding-bottom:10px;"> <img alt="Scientists performing laboratory analysis" src="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/Q40-Lab.jpg" style="width: 406px; float: left; padding-right: 5px;" /> <img alt="Farming equipment spraying crops with pesticides" src="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/Q40-Tractor.jpg" style="width: 200px; padding-bottom: 5px;" /><br /> <img alt="Children eating apples" src="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/Q40-Kids.jpg" style="width: 200px;" /></div> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:15px; line-height:21px; padding-bottom:10px; width:550px;">The most common method for examining pesticide residues in fruit, vegetables and other foods is known as the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quechers">QuEChERS Method</a>. QuEChERS (pronounced "catchers") stands for Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe. Originally published in 2003, this method has since been accepted around the world and is possibly the most used preparation method for multi-residue analysis today. Using the QuEChERS Method, the analyst homogenizes a sample (fruits, vegetables, etc.) in a blender and puts it in a centrifuge tube with a reagent, then agitates it for one minute. The reagents used depend on the type of sample to be analyzed. Following this, the sample is put through a cleanup column prior to analysis by gas-liquid chromatography.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:15px; line-height:21px; padding-bottom:10px; width:550px;">The <a href="https://www.teledynetekmar.com/AutoMateQ40/">AutoMate-Q40</a>, designed by <a href="https://www.teledynetekmar.com/">Teledyne Tekmar</a>, Mason, Ohio, is the first product specifically designed to optimize and automate the QuEChERS extraction process. It enables laboratories to achieve improved precision and accuracy for QuEChERS sample preparation while increasing sample capacity and improving workplace safety. Prepared sample trays are loaded into the machine and a method and/or schedule is selected through the TekTouch™ software control. The chemist can now step away and perform other tasks, such as important data analysis, while the AutoMate-Q40 methodically executes a litany of manual tasks to complete the sample extraction. It decaps the sample vial, adds solvent and standard, recaps and vortexes the sample, decaps and adds salt to the sample, recaps and shakes the sample, centrifuges the sample and validates the sample's extract volume. If clean-up is desired, the AutoMate-Q40 will then pipette the sample extract into dSPE clean-up, shake the clean-up vial, centrifuge the clean-up vial, validate the clean-up extract volume, and pipette the clean-up volume into a final extract volume. Finally, the extract vial is returned to the sample tray for analysis.</p> <p><img alt="Teledyne Tekmar's AutoMate-Q40" src="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/AutoMate-Q40.png" style="width: 450px; padding-bottom: 20px;" /></p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:15px; line-height:21px; padding-bottom:10px; width:550px;">This automation is powered by pneumatics, a decision that was ultimately based on cost and ease of programming. For Michael Maroon, Mechanical Engineer at Teledyne Tekmar, the choice was clear. "The air valve actuates, then the cylinder moves. As opposed to using a motor to drive a lead screw or a pulley or a belt until it hits an end stop—all while utilizing encoder feedback to verify how many steps were required to make the motion. It was simpler," says Michael. "For example, on our capping wheel where we're capping different diameter vials, we just want to push the wheel over apply a force on the vial, then spin it to remove the vial cap. Electronically, that would difficult to implement because a feedback device would be needed to signal how much force the unit is applying against the vial. That would be very time-consuming and costly to implement." Additionally, according to Tom Hartlein, Tekmar's Product Line Manager, "We know historically from using pneumatic solutions for our other product lines for 30+ years, our warranty values are typically less than 1%. That translates into a high probability of success using pneumatics."</p> <div style="padding-bottom:10px;"> <img alt="Close-up of dzweb valves in laboratory automation machine" src="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/Q40-Pneumatics-2.jpg" style="width: 406px; float: left; padding-right: 5px;" /> <img alt="Close-up of dzweb valves in laboratory automation machine" src="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/Q40-Pneumatics-3.jpg" style="width: 200px; padding-bottom: 5px;" /><br /> <img alt="Close-up of dzweb valves in laboratory automation machine" src="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/Q40-Pneumatics-1.jpg" style="width: 200px;" /></div> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:15px; line-height:21px; padding-bottom:10px; width:550px;">When the time came to specify components, Tekmar consulted with <a href="https://www.isaacsfluidpower.com/">Isaacs Fluid Power</a> who recommended dzweb's line of <a href="/products/electronic-valve-10-15mm">10 and 15 mm valves</a>. Offered in both Normally-Open or Normally-Closed models, these valves are perfect for small areas where compact electronically-controlled pneumatics are needed. According to Michael Maroon, an added benefit was the flexibility of having the same valve throughout the machine, thereby simplifying the need for inventory. In addition to the pneumatic valves, other dzweb products integral to the machine include <a href="/products/fitting">fittings</a>, <a href="/part/configure/MAR1">pressure regulators</a>, and <a href="/products/fitting-hose-tubing">tubing</a>. Working in concert, Teledyne Tekmar, dzweb Instrument Laboratory and Isaacs Fluid Power engineer, manufacture and build the components and subassemblies that make up the machine's pneumatic controls.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:15px; line-height:21px; padding-bottom:10px; width:550px;">Teledyne Tekmar's AutoMate Q-40 is an impressive example of laboratory automation made possible with dzweb pneumatics. In addition to pesticide multi-residue analysis, other possible applications include analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in seafood, analysis of veterinary drug residues in livestock, analysis of nutraceuticals and dietary supplements and more. Hartlein says, "the possibilities are basically unlimited. Generally, anything that goes through an extraction that requires a solid, addition of a solvent, shaking, centrifuging and pipette vetting is a candidate for the AutoMate-Q40."</p> <p> </p> <hr /> <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"> <tbody> <tr> <td colspan="5"> <p style="font-weight:bold; font-size:18px;"><br /> Related Products:</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <!--PRODUCT 1--> <td class="rtecenter" style="border-right:1px solid #ccc; padding-left:10px; padding-right:5px; text-align:center;" valign="top" width="125"> <a href="/part/configure/E*10*">10 mm Valves</a><br /> <br /> <a href="/part/configure/E*10*"><img alt="dzweb 10 mm Electronic Valves" src="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/10mm.png" style="width: 75px;" /> </a></td> <!--PRODUCT 2--> <td class="rtecenter" style="border-right:1px solid #ccc; padding-left:10px; padding-right:5px; text-align:center;" valign="top" width="125"> <a href="/part/configure/E*15*">15 mm Valves</a><br /> <br /> <a href="/part/configure/E*15*"><img alt="15 mm Valves" src="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/15mm.png" style="height: 75px;" /> </a></td> <!--PRODUCT 3--> <td class="rtecenter" style="border-right:1px solid #ccc; padding-left:10px; padding-right:5px; text-align:center;" valign="top" width="125"> <a href="/part/configure/MAR1">Pressure Regulators</a><br /> <br /> <a href="/part/configure/MAR1"><img alt="dzweb Miniature Pressure Regulator" src="/static/images/cache/db/dbef8a8cce49feac52d6ffc4ff2c5605ceec0f9d-900x700.jpg" style="width: 100px; padding-top: 10px;" /> </a></td> <!--PRODUCT 4--> <td class="rtecenter" style="border-right:0px solid #ccc; padding-left:10px; padding-right:5px; text-align:center;" valign="top" width="125"> <a href="/products/fitting-hose-tubing">Hose &amp; Tubing</a><br /> <br /> <a href="/products/fitting-hose-tubing"><img alt="dzweb Hose &amp; Tubing" src="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/related_hose-tubing.png" style="height: 100px;" /> </a></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p> </p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags-wiki field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/cms/tags/mar" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">MAR</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/cms/tags/dr-2" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">DR-2</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/cms/tags/custom" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">custom</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/cms/tags/10-mm" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">10 mm</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/cms/tags/15-mm" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">15 mm</a></div></div></div> Sun, 28 Feb 2016 15:00:06 +0000 Rachel Desenberg 434 at /cms /cms/wiki/laboratory-automation-pesticide-residue-analysis#comments Pneumatic Solutions for Wound Therapy /cms/wiki/pneumatic-solutions-wound-therapy <div class="field field-name-field-category-wiki field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Category:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/cms/categories/applications" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Applications</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>The lack of standardized wound therapy methods and care contributes to unnecessarily long treatment and healing times. font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">Industrial OEMs often face challenges when it comes to optimizing their pneumatic control systems. These systems are critical for maintaining precision and efficiency in a wide range of industrial applications, from material handling to assembly operations. Frequent maintenance issues, energy inefficiencies, and inconsistent performance can contribute to higher operational costs and unplanned downtime, disrupting production schedules and reducing overall productivity.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">OEMs require solutions that are not only reliable and efficient but also scalable and cost-effective. The pneumatic control systems must integrate seamlessly into existing machinery, often within space and weight constraints imposed by the specific industrial environment. Additionally, there is a growing need to reduce energy consumption and enhance sustainability across operations, adding complexity to the challenge.</p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;"><a href="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/industrial-oem.jpg"><img alt="Industrial OEM" src="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/industrial-oem.jpg" style="width: 600px;" /></a></p> <p style="letter-spacing: 4px; color:#82C341; font-size: 18px; font-weight: bold; font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">.............................................................................</p> <p><span style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: bold; color:#0072BC;">Solution:</span></p> <h2 style="font-size: 18px; font-weight: normal; font-style: italic; color:#0072BC; width:800px;"> Special dzweb valve banks with injection-molded manifolds</h2> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:0px;"><a href="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/injection-molded-manifolds.jpg"><img alt="Special dzweb Valve Banks with Injection-Molded Manifolds" src="/cms/sites/default/files/wiki_images/injection-molded-manifolds.jpg" style="width: 500px;" /></a></p> <p style="text-align:left; font-size:14px; line-height:21px; width:475px; padding-bottom:10px; padding-left:50px;">One way dzweb is able to address these challenges is by upgrading the pneumatic control systems with compact, lightweight banks of valves on injection-molded manifolds. <a href="/products/electronic-valve-10-15mm">These three-way, two-position valves</a> are selected for their versatility, reliability, and efficient air flow control, making them suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.
